Death Toll from Indonesia School Collapse Hits Sixty
The victims were discovered beneath the debris between midnight and 6:15 p.m. local time, said BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari in an official statement. Preliminary data, based on the school’s attendance list, indicates that three individuals remain unaccounted for.
Rescuers recovered not only whole bodies but also five body parts. All remains have been transported to Bhayangkara Hospital in Surabaya for identification procedures.
Meanwhile, the number of injured patients under medical care has increased to 104. Among them, four have been discharged, 99 are still hospitalized, and one individual requires no treatment.
Emergency teams are continuing their efforts in sectors A1 and A2, where collapsed concrete slabs still cover older sections of the structure. Authorities are carefully removing debris to prevent further damage to adjacent buildings.
The disaster occurred on September 29, when the school building gave way, trapping dozens of students inside.
