Building collapse results in four deaths in Madrid
(MENAFN) Four people have died after a six-storey building under renovation partially collapsed in central Madrid. The last two missing individuals were found Wednesday morning, around 15 hours after several floors of the property on Hileras Street gave way.
Local reports indicate the victims included a 30-year-old Spanish woman managing the project and three male workers from Mali, Guinea, and Ecuador, aged between 30 and 50. Three others sustained injuries.
The former office block was being transformed into a hotel, and authorities have opened an investigation into the incident. Spanish emergency services deployed multiple crews, including drones and sniffer dogs, to search for missing persons following the collapse. Two bodies had already been recovered Tuesday night.
"All our love and support go to their families, friends, and colleagues in this very difficult time," the city’s mayor, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, wrote in a social media post.
One construction worker recalled that he was pumping concrete into the building’s lower floors when it collapsed and fled after seeing a large dust cloud. Despite the internal collapse, the building’s façade remained intact. According to the developer’s website, the structure was undergoing a "comprehensive" renovation to become a four-star hotel.
