Gulf Airspace Closes Amid Escalating Israel-US-Iran Conflict

(MENAFN) The escalating conflict between Israel, the United States, and Iran has forced extensive airspace closures across the Gulf, significantly impacting international aviation through some of the busiest transit hubs in the world.

Over the past two decades, cities such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha have become major transfer points connecting Europe and the Americas with Asia, Africa, and Oceania. The ongoing airspace restrictions have disrupted these routes, creating ripple effects for long-haul networks and increasing operational and insurance costs for airlines globally.

The crisis began in the early hours of February 28, when Israel and the US launched joint airstrikes against Iranian targets. Tehran retaliated with attacks on US military bases and logistical facilities in multiple Arab countries, prompting widespread flight restrictions throughout the region.

Airspace over Iran, Iraq, Israel, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Syria was largely closed as of Monday, according to flight monitoring services, while parts of the UAE and Saudi Arabia remained partially open.

Abu Dhabi Airports reported — in a now-deleted statement on X — that an incident at Zayed International Airport resulted in one death and seven injuries. Meanwhile, the EU Aviation Safety Agency has issued warnings describing the region as a “high risk to civil aviation.”
