Guterres Holds Phone Call with Qatari Emir Amid Rising Mideast Conflict
According to a UN statement, the conversation focused on the "urgent need" to halt the current military escalation and restore dialogue "in the interest of regional stability."
Guterres condemned the recent attacks on Qatar as a breach of the country’s "sovereignty and territorial integrity" and emphasized Qatar’s role as a "strong and valued partner" of the United Nations.
Earlier Monday, Qatari authorities reported that their air defenses had intercepted two SU-24 aircraft originating from Iran, as well as seven ballistic missiles and five drones targeting the Gulf state.
These assaults are part of Iran’s wider retaliatory campaign following a joint US-Israeli offensive launched on Saturday, which, according to reports, resulted in the deaths of several senior Iranian figures, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Tehran has since struck multiple Gulf nations hosting American military forces.
