ICE Agents Open Fire on Alleged Gang Member on California Highway

(MENAFN) Agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement opened fire on a suspected gang member during an operation on a busy roadway in California on Tuesday, according to reports.

The incident occurred along Interstate 5 near Patterson, located southeast of San Francisco, where officers initiated a vehicle stop targeting the individual.

Authorities identified the man as Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez, stating that as agents approached, he "weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run an officer over," according to a statement from acting ICE director Todd Lyons. Officials said agents then responded by opening fire, striking him as he allegedly tried to escape.

A local witness described the aftermath as tense and unsettling, saying, "Everyone is freaking out." He added, "Usually it’s really busy today, but I only have like three, four tables, because nobody wants to go out. That’s really, really scary for all of us."

Following the shooting, the suspect was transported to a nearby hospital for medical care.

According to reports, he is believed to be affiliated with the 18th Street gang and is sought for questioning in relation to a homicide case in El Salvador.

The operation also involved U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Meanwhile, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with local authorities, has launched an inquiry into the incident, which officials described as being "in its early stages."
