Kremlin Brushes Aside Fresh US Oil Sanctions

(MENAFN) Russia has developed the resilience to absorb fresh Western economic pressure, the Kremlin declared Thursday, brushing aside Washington's decision to let a key sanctions waiver on Russian oil expire without renewal.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's Wednesday announcement — confirming Washington would not extend its waiver on Russian oil purchases — by calling the move entirely anticipated.

"We have been living under the weight of sanctions for months and years … and we have already learned to act in a way that minimizes the consequences of such measures for our interests," Peskov said.

The waiver in question had temporarily authorized the purchase of Russian oil stranded at sea, a short-term measure introduced last month to ease pressure on global energy markets. At the time of its announcement, Bessent characterized it as a "narrowly tailored, short-term measure" applicable solely to oil already in transit. The Treasury Department exemption took effect on March 12 and lapsed on April 11.

With the window now closed, Moscow signaled it has no intention of being rattled — framing the expiration as a predictable development in a sanctions battle it believes it has already learned to navigate.
